FAQs

What are the reasons to use tallow in skincare, and what benefits does it offer?

Tallow, traditionally rendered beef fat, has long been revered in skincare for its remarkable compatibility with human skin. Historically, tallow has been a staple in healing and moisturizing formulations due to the essential fatty acid compounds that closely mimic those found in our skin. Tallow's fatty acid profile not only hydrates but also helps to soften and improve skin suppleness by reinforcing the skin’s natural lipid barrier. This makes it exceptionally effective at being absorbed and utilized by the skin, supporting its ability to maintain moisture and elasticity. Despite falling out of popular use with the industrialization of skincare products, our commitment to harnessing tallow’s traditional and natural benefits remains strong. We are passionate about reintroducing this effective, clean ingredient to modern skincare practices, leveraging its historical use to nurture and protect the skin. We use organic, grass-fed suet tallow to create the best and most effective tallow skincare possible.

Where do you source your tallow?

Our tallow is sourced from local farmers who raise their cattle on organic grass. The cows are not treated with mRNA vaccines and live long and happy lives.

Is your tallow dry or wet rendered?

Always dry rendered. Wet-rendered tallow strips away much of the nutritional content and makes the tallow more susceptible to mold.

Do your products smell like beef?

No. Our tallow is triple rendered, and our products are all mixed with organic, herbal, coffee, or Madagascar vanilla bean infused oils that eliminate any faint smell of beef that could remain with the tallow standing on its own.

Which tallow moisturizer is right for me?

Morning Joe Glow - made for all skin types. MJG is a highly caffeinated coffee and green coffee bean infused eye cream, also using other premium oils that help to soften fine lines around the eyes. The caffeine content reduces puffiness and dark eye circles. Smells like rich coffee & cream.

Healing Helper - made for sensitive or problematic skin. Healing Helper is infused with rich tamanu oil, which is known for its skin regenerative properties. It’s also infused with baobab and prickly pear which further help to nourish and heal the skin. This is a great one for those struggling with acne or scarring. Smells like nutty maple pancakes.

Farm Silk - made for those with sensitive skin and who are adverse to any type of scent. It uses a blend of rich premium oils that provide an intense silky layer of hydration

Rose Decadence - made for dry, mature or aging skin types. Rose Decadence is our most luxurious tallow infused with a powerhouse of anti-aging and antioxidant ingredients. It has a rich creamy texture that melts into the skin and helps to repair overnight. Along with the infusion of CoQ10 enzyme, it uses the highly prized rose otto oil, carrot seed oil and geranium to help reverse signs of aging and clarify the skin.

Which products are safe during pregnancy/breastfeeding?

The products we recommend during pregnancy or breastfeeding are the Genesis body butter and the Farm Silk moisturizer. Both of these products are essential oil free and only use gentle carrier oils, tallow and butters. Simply tallow soap is also safe. However, we do not make guarantees and you should always check with your physician beforehand and do a patch test before a full application of the product.

Why do the color and texture of the product sometimes vary slightly between orders?

The individuality of our Tallow Balm is a mark of its natural derivation and meticulous handcrafting process. Slight differences in color, texture, and scent reflect the pure, natural ingredients used rather than chemical alternatives. The tallow we use can vary from batch to batch, influenced by seasonal changes, the animal's diet, and environmental factors. Our balm, being handcrafted, also reacts to temperature changes, firming up in cooler conditions and softening when it's warmer. Even if it melts and resets, its efficacy remains intact. These characteristics emphasize the authenticity of our Tallow Balm as a truly natural product for skincare.

I found a few small specks in my balm, what are they?

Occasionally, you may notice tiny specks within our tallow products. These are generally natural remnants from the herbs and botanicals used during the infusion process. Despite rigorous filtering to maintain the highest purity, a few minute particles may occasionally remain. This is a rare occurrence and does not affect the tallow's quality or effectiveness.

Do you only make tallow products?

No. We offer a variety of other natural, non-toxic products. We carry organic facial oils for both oil cleansing and moisturizing, serums - such as niacinamide (a treatment for smaller pores), hyaluronic acid (naturally plumps the skin) and bakuchiol serum (considered “nature’s retinol”). We also carry hand-made cold process tallow soap, a variety of lotions, toner, magnesium mist for stress and improved sleep, and other wellness products. You can find a full natural skincare regime with us.

How are your soaps scented?

We offer an option for everyone. We have unscented tallow soap, essential oil tallow soap and tallow soap that uses clean, non-toxic fragrance oil. The soaps can be sorted by a filter at the top of the collection page, and the ingredients are always clearly listed.

Any fragrance oil we use is phthalate, paraben, carcinogen and mutagen free. All of our fragrance oils come from Shay and Company who make it a point to follow ethical fragrance standards. We also ONLY use fragrance in soap, because it is a wash-off product and will not absorb into the skin.

How should I store my tallow?

To keep your tallow in its best condition, keep it in a dark place at room temperature. It’s important to keep any moisture, especially water, out of your tallow. This can cause bacteria to grow. Keep the lid firmly on to retain freshness and extend the shelf life.

How should I store my oils and serums?

Oils and serums last the longest and maintain their effectiveness when they are kept in a cool dark place with the top sealed firmly.

What is the shelf life of my tallow and your other products?

The shelf life of our tallow products is 12 months. These are best when used within 6 months. Our oils and serums have a shelf life of up to 24 months when stored correctly, and are best within the first 12 months.
